Brandkings Digital Agency

Book A Call

Ever wondered what happens in the day of a digital marketer? Wonder no more. Join me (Mitchel Openda – Digital Marketing Executive at Brandkings Kenya ) as I take you through a typical day of a digital marketer.

My day starts at 8 am and the first hour of work is spent on Checking & responding to all priority mails, as you grow up and work in the industry your email app is more like a social media app, see how you usually check your WhatsApp, Twitter or Instagram almost hourly? That’s the same with the email app for me. (Like most online-based occupations today, lots of the work of digital marketing happens over email. Expect to be in constant communication with people within and outside of your company if you work in digital marketing).

After checking and responding to emails, I start reviewing the day-wise performance of our overall marketing campaigns i.e., yesterday’s & the Month’s daily performance. This is important as it helps me project the success of the campaign and also important when updating a client on the progress of a campaign.

Up-next is going through the KPIs(Key Performance Indicators), this helps to monitor the progress of ads, campaigns, and brands

Immediately after, I go through the day’s content calendar and decide on what shall be uploaded on the insta-stories and page posts. With the backing of a talented photography and graphic design team, my work is easy in that I receive professionally shot and edited images to be posted, my only task is to create a captivating caption that aligns with the image, message, and content calendar.

After all, posts are uploaded I make sure the right keywords are being used on ads and campaigns cause this is important to the success of campaigns. At this point, I do a bit of keyword research using the google keyword planner and try to see if there are any new keywords that I might have missed when creating a campaign, if so I shall add them.

Next, I move to website search engine optimization. Brandkings provides website management services and within that package SEO (Search Engine Optimization is provided. In simple terms, SEO is the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in Google, Bing, and other search engines. The better visibility your pages have in search results, the more likely you are to garner attention and attract prospective and existing customers to your business.

After SEO is done, research is done. During the research, I go through our competitors’ websites and social media to see what new things they are doing that we can also implement. Competitor analysis is good and healthy in that :

  • It helps you identify new market trends.
  • Avoiding mistakes- By studying your competition, you can forecast problems beforehand and make the necessary arrangements to avoid or combat them head-on.
  • Helps you identify your USP (unique selling points) by seeing what you are doing differently from others.
  • Identify Market gaps-you can identify areas within the market that are not being served properly or are being left out entirely by your competition.
  • Services and product improvement -trough conducting competitor analysis, you can gain a huge advantage from learning what your competitors are improving or developing for their future services/products.

By this time it’s already 1 pm and at this point, I hurriedly shut down my laptop and directly go to the fridge to rummage and see what I will be eating for lunch. Since I work from home, I give my brain a break from the work with a bit of Netflix and chill by catching up with some series.

Currently on my watchlist is:

  1. White-Collar – currently binging it for the second time. With 6 seasons it definitely keeps you busy.
  2. Euphoria
  3. Power book IV

Excited for the new releases that are coming such as Snowfall, Peaky blinders, and Atlanta which will definitely keep me busy during my lunch breaks.

After lunch, I catch up with my boss and he updates me on new projects that should be worked on and updates from his meetings with clients. At this point depending on the client, we start preparing the evening posts that are supposed to be uploaded. Posting once or twice a day for a client is dependent on the brand performance and brand analysis that is made by our team.

For the remaining work hours I :

– Running software to check speed and security.

– Testing functionalities.

– Checking pictures to see if they are correctly named with an alt tag.

– Checking if images and videos are of reduced size for an optimal load.

– Reviewing content for spelling errors and typos.

– Optimizing titles and reducing sentence length to improve readability, which plays a role in SEO.

– Checking SEO via software and analyzing the ranking of certain words.

– Checking internal links and CTAs

Finally, an exhausting but fulfilling day comes to an end with me checking my dairy and ticking off things on my to-do list to ensure that I didn’t miss anything.

Hopefully, that describes the day-to-day activities of a digital marketer. Some days are exciting where I join the photography team on their shoots with different brands and clients and some days like today are spent mostly on the computer.

BTS with photography team.
